When Lot handed over his 2 virgin daughter's to the mob outside, was he giving them away for marriage?
Question:
Or, was he simply trying to protect himself and his guests?? Just let God protect his two daughters with the mob, maybe?
Sorry. I just don't understand what in this story makes Lot the Hero of anyone's day... Or, what the moral of this story should be.
Answer:
If THAT model of sexual morality as depicted in the story of Lot was followed today, we'd have a much different society.
Originally this story had NOT been interpreted as a 'town of homosexuals."
if you reference the Bible, there are well over 20 references to the story of Sodom and NOT ONE talks about homosexuality or expresses this view.
The various quotes elsewhere in the Bible other sins are recorded but not a one speaks of homosexual sex. Ezekiel is possibly the most expressive:
"Behold this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom, pride, fullness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. And they were haughty and committed abominations before me; therefore I took them away as I saw good."
Ezekiel 16: 49-50
Please note that there were many "abominations" [or breaking of ritual law] in the Bible, thus this is no more a reference to homosexuality than all the other recorded sins.
To assume an entire town mob as homosexual offenders is preposterous. Now what WAS done in many of the situations in the Old Testament {and in that period of history} was to deliberately debase any prisoner by raping them. But this was done by heterosexuals intent on they considered the greatest hunmiliation they could do to an enemy.
The reinterpretation of Sodom as a condemnation of homosexuality did not occure until well after the Holiness Codes [the last several chapters of Leviticus] were even written. In fact the very first book [not in today's Bible actually] that spoke of homosexuality as a sin of Sodom was the book The Wisdom of Solomon written almost at the time of Christ.
The work was actually written in Greek about 75 BC or perhaps as late as AD 40. Its author was an Alexandrian Jew who was attempting to strengthen the religious commitment of the Hellenistic Jewish community and, if possible, to convert the Gentiles.
It was by this time that a much more significantly patristic concept of gender fulfillment was understood by the Hebrews especially after the absorbtion of the mores of the Babylonians where the leaders were taken after the fall of Judea.
The Babylonian captivity, is the name typically given to the deportation and exile of the Jews of the ancient Kingdom of Judah to Babylon by Nebuchadnezzar II in 586 BC. The captivity and subsequent return to Israel are pivotal events in the history of the Jews and Judaism, and had far-reaching impacts on the development of modern Jewish culture, religion, and practice.
The Babylonian captivity had a number of serious effects on Judaism and the Jewish culture, including changes to the Hebrew alphabet and changes in the fundamental practices and customs of the Jewish religion.
The much more patristic ideal of gender role in society was partially absorbed into the Jewish culture and religion and it was during this captivity when the later chapters of leviticus was written and for the first time homosexual activity [seemingly according to some interpretations] was now condemned along with a number of other practices.
To get back to the story of Lot and Sodom. IF one really wanted to take from this story a concept of sexual morality please note.
1) the [heterosexual] mob were intent on raping two angles;
2) Lot, a just and good man, was quite willing to send out his two virgin daughters to be raped in their stead
3) Later his two virgin daughters got their father drunk and seduced him and became pregnmant by him.
If THAT model of sexual morality was followed today, we'd have a much different society.
And also please note. The entire concept of sexual orientation and homosexuality (and even heterosexuality) was totally unknown back then. Therefore any translation which uses these concepts MUST necessarily be not completely correct. Even during the time of Paul, these concepts were unknown. To Paul FIRST the people abandoned God and THEN they were captured by their lusts. {aul could not even have conceived of either homosexuality nor the possibility that two gay people could ever live a live of love, self-sacrifice, and committment. This concept was totally alien to him. And newer translations today which lists "homosexuality" or "homosexual practice" in the lists of "sins" in Paul's Epistles are also in error simply because this broad interpretation and concept of sexual identity was unknown at this time.
